Everton 0–2 Chelsea: Neto Takes Care of Business as Blues Show Progress
Chelsea’s 2–0 win at Everton raised my expectations for this team. Pedro Neto supplied two composed finishes, but the encouragement went beyond the goals. Chelsea survived an uncomfortable start, grew into the attack and held their nerve through a physical game to leave with a much-needed clean sheet.
There is a qualification: Everton are not the most threatening attacking side Chelsea will face. Even so, an away performance like this gives Xabi Alonso something to build on. Chelsea had to work through difficult moments, and this time those moments did not undo them.
Martínez kept Chelsea level early
For a while, the opening followed a familiar and worrying pattern. Everton applied decent pressure, and Chelsea’s defensive struggles looked capable of becoming the story again.
A well-delivered ball created a headed opportunity that required a sharp reaction from Emiliano Martínez. Jack Grealish also sent a bouncing effort toward goal that threatened to find its way in, but Martínez dealt with that too.
Those saves deserve attention when assessing the clean sheet. Chelsea did not shut down every attack from the first whistle. Their goalkeeper helped them through an uncertain spell and gave the team time to settle.
Chelsea began asking questions before halftime
Around the 40-minute mark, I felt Chelsea were beginning to take over more of the attacking play.
Moisés Caicedo attempted an ambitious volley from a corner that would have been a beauty had it gone in. Neto tested Jordan Pickford with a firm strike from outside the box, while another corner produced a header that needed an alert intervention from Harrison Armstrong to keep it out.
Chelsea were making Everton work to preserve the level score. The game had begun to shift before the break, even though the breakthrough had yet to arrive.
Neto kept his finishing simple
Shortly after halftime, Chelsea put together the attack that finally brought the opening goal. Jorrel Hato supplied the ball for Neto, who finished cleanly.
What stood out to me was how little Neto tried to complicate the opportunity. He did not try to do too much. He just took care of business.
There is real value in that composure, particularly after a first half in which Chelsea had threatened without finding a way through. Neto supplied the finish the move needed and gave Chelsea a lead to protect.
He showed the same quality late on. Around the 90-minute mark, Jordan Henderson’s blocked free kick left a loose ball for Neto to collect and finish. Once again, he was precise when the opportunity came. Chelsea finally had the second goal that all but secured the win.
Injury concern interrupts an encouraging afternoon
The difficult moment came midway through the second half when Martínez suffered an ugly injury and had to leave the pitch. He had been playing well and had made an important contribution to Chelsea’s position in the game.
The concern for him was bigger than the result. My thoughts and prayers are with him, and hopefully there will be encouraging news about his recovery.
Mike Penders deserves credit for his response after coming on. Entering unexpectedly after an incident like that is a difficult assignment, but I thought he did a fine job. His performance offered some reassurance about Chelsea’s cover in goal while they await clarity on Martínez’s availability.
A result that raises expectations
Chelsea’s first Premier League clean sheet since January ended a run of 22 league games without one. That makes this an important step, although one afternoon cannot answer every question about the defence.
There were enough yellow cards to make discipline another concern. Chelsea stayed cool enough to avoid a sending-off, protected their advantage and finished the job.
That is why this result raised my expectations. Everton exposed some vulnerabilities early, but Chelsea recovered, became more dangerous and handled the rest of the contest well. With Martínez making the early saves, Penders contributing off the bench and Neto taking care of business at the other end, Chelsea earned an away win that gives supporters more reason for confidence.
